The 29th Mahaweli Games ended on Sunday with the Mahaweli B zone winning the overall championship.The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The two-day event was held at the Mahaweli Stadium in Galnewa and featured eight sports.
The Minister of Sports, the Chief Minister of the North Central Province and the Governor of the North Central Province were among the dignitaries in attendance at the closing ceremony, which was graced by President Maithripala Sirisena.
Various cultural performances added colour to the ceremony. The Mahaweli B zone emerged overall champions at the games, where athletes from ten Mahaweli zones competed.
R.B. Rajapaksa from the Kuruluwewa Mahaweli zone was adjudged the best athlete at the games, having set a new Mahaweli record in long jump.
Shafiya Yaseen from the Victoria zone was adjudged the best woman athlete, setting a new Mahaweli record in the 200 metre-sprint.
