The first meeting of the Constitutional Council commenced on Thursday September 10, under the auspices of the Speaker of Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya.
The Constitutional Council focussed on the appointment of three civil society representatives to the council, thereby proposing Dr. A.T.Aiyarathne, Dr. Radhika Coomaraswamy and President’s Counsel Shibly Aziz as the civil society representatives. The names of the three representatives are due to be produced before Parliament on September 22.
A communique by the council reads that proposals will be sought from the leaders of the accepted political parties, professionals and civil organisation over the appointments to the commissions.
The Constitutional Council will reconvene on September 21 and 23.
