Leader of the House, Lakshman Kiriella assumed duties on Wednesday, September 2. He was quizzed by journalists on the new government.

Leader of the House, Lakshman Kiriella stated they can form a government. as a ‘stand alone party’ but there are a number of issues that are currently faced by the country, and solutions cannot be found for these issues alone.

He went on to note that a constitutional amendment is required to provide a solution for the conflict in the north and the east which requires two thirds of the majority. He added that the SLFP and UNP need to unite in order to face international challenges – which is how the country can be saved – along with members of the tri-forces.

Journalists also questioned Kiriella regarding the composition of the cabinet.

In addition to this, he added that if the cabinet is to consist of more than 30 members, parliamentary approval needs to be obtained which is what they are trying to do tomorrow, as the cabinet can be appointed only after approval is obtained.

Question
How many will the cabinet consist of?

Lakshman Kiriella

In truth, I do not know about the size. I only know about what I will be receiving, the rest is unknown to me. The Prime Minister will select the ministerial portfolios assigned to the UNP, while the president will select those for the other side.

Question

Has the other side completed their selection?

Lakshman Kiriella

I think most of it has been completed.

Question
Will the Prime Minister bring back those who were defeated?

Lakshman Kiriella

I do not know about that. However, the Prime Minister made it clear from the beginning that the United National Party will not select any candidate who has lost, to the National List.

Chief Government Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka stated that they will put forward a proposal tomorrow to obtain approval and increase the size of the cabinet to form a National Government.

He went on to note that the cabinet of the New National Government will take their oaths on the morning of September 4, and through this they will be to create a new political culture in the country.
