A closer look at the political lives of Karu Jayasuriya and Thilanga Sumathipala

News 1st takes a look at the careers of  the new Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thilanga Sumathipala.

Deshabandu Karu Jajaysuriya was elected as the new speaker of Parliament on Tuesday. He is incidentally the 20th Speaker in the history of the Sri Lankan Parliament.

He began his career as a businessman and diplomat and also served as the Chairman of the United National Party. He made his debut into active politics in 1996 and held the post of the Mayor of Colombo.

Thereafter, he contested for the post of Western Provincial Councilor and was appointed as the leader of the opposition of the Western Provincial Council. He first entered parliament in 2000 and was thereafter appointed the Minster of Power and Energy in 2001 from the United National Front.

He later joined Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government as the Minister of Public Administration.He later intevened in the issues that arose in the UNP and served as the Deputy Leader of the UNP and the Chairman of the UNP Leadership Committee.

Thilanga Sumathipala was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the 8th Parliament of Sri Lanka. Sumathipala who was a well known businessman later entered the political arena.

He was most famous for his role as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket. He entered active politics as a Western Provincial Councillor and later became the SLFP organiser for the Borella Electorate. He made his debut in Parliament from the Colombo District.

He was then appointed as the Deputy Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training. He was elected to Parliament this time from the UPFA National List.
