Barcelona striker Lionel Messi won the European player of the year award for the second time on Thursday (August 27).
The Argentina forward was presented with the trophy by UEFA President Michel Platini shortly after the draw for the Champions League group stages was made in Monaco.
FFC Frankfurt striker Celia Sasic, who retired at the end of last season, won the women’s trophy.
Messi saw off competition from Barcelona team-mate and fellow South American Luis Suarez, as well as Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
Last season Messi helped Barca win the Champions League, as well as La Liga and the Kings Cup.
Sasic was nominated alongside Amandine Henry and Dzsenifer Marozsan. She helped Germany to the semi finals of the 2015 World Cup, and also won the Champions League last year with Frankfurt, but called time on her career in July aged just 27.
