Indian coast guard vessel “Varaha” handed over to Sri Lanka Navy (Photos and Video)

The Indian coast guard vessel “Varaha” was ceremonially handed over to the Sri Lanka Navy on Thursday (August 27th) at the Colombo Port. The vessel has been in service with the Sri Lanka navy as the SLNS Sagara since 2006.

The vessel which was provided by the Indian Government on a free dry lease agreement to the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006 was ceremonially handed over by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Y.K. Sinha. The secretary of Defense B.M.U.D. Basnayake was present at the occasion along with the Chief of Defense staff and high-ranking officials of the Sri Lanka Navy. A special plaque was also unveiled to mark the occasion.

The Sri Lankan Navy accorded a Guard of Honour to the Indian high commissioner upon his arrival and the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne welcomed him and the other distinguished invitees onboard SLNS Sagara.

According to information provided by the Sri Lanka Navy SLNS Sagara is an Offshore Patrol Vessel made by India in 1992. The ship measures 75m in length and 11m in width. SLNS Sagara served the Sri Lanka Navy in many successful operations conducted during the conflict period. It has contributed immensely for surveillance activities since 2009 to date.
