Tensions were reported during a demonstration between supporters of the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in the Ratnapura town.
Supporters from UNP carried out a protest demanding that SLFP candidates who have allegations levelled against them not be given ministerial portfolios.
Fifty metres away, another protest was carried out by a group of supporters from SLFP against the stance of the group of UNP supporters. They stated that seniors of the SLFP who were fielded from the National List should be given an opportunity to hold ministerial positions in the government.
The demonstrations which were carried out on both sides of the main road for one and a half hours, caused heavy traffic on the roads that led to the Ratnapura town. Thereafter, a tense situation arose between the two groups. Police had to intervene the tense situation.
UPFA, W.D.J. Seneviratne stated that these activities will disrupt the peace in the area whereas to operate as one government, both parties should have a good understanding and operate cordially.
He added that this programme is organised to sabotage the current process by the regional leader of UNP.
