Farmers from Kilinochchi say they are being let down by the government’s ‘crippled’ process of purchasing paddy. The purchasing of paddy harvests in the Kilinochchi District takes place at a storage facility located in Kandavalei.
Farmers in the district were informed that paddy will be purchased at this facility for the prices stipulated by the government. This footage (see video) shows the piles and piles of paddy harvests from Kondavil, Kokkavil and Kilinochchi areas that have been lining up at this facility for over two days.
These farmers have been compelled to stay on the road for days under the scorching heat in order to sell their paddy harvests. Farmers say that they have been informed that the paddy purchase has been crippled as a result of the low storage space at the facility.
Farmers of the area stated that they have faced numerous hardships to bring their harvests but after they bring it, there is no space to store the paddy.
They also added that their are over 80 to 90 tractors from Kilinochchi alone. They pointed out that there needs to be a streamlined process. They were there several days before the election but even after the elections they have to wait in line. Some farmers have rented these vehicles.
The people of Kilinochchi say that a streamlined process needs to be in effect in order to ease the pain of the farmers.
