Price of rice has decreased in the local market in comparison to July.

The decrease in the prices of rice came into effect with the increased yield in the Maha harvesting season. Large stocks of rice are entering the market as a result of the increased yield in the Yala harvesting season as well.

Duminda Priyadarshana, Division Head of Sales, Food products, Policies and Agrarian Projects of the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute,  stated that the rice prices could further reduce.

A price of a kilogramme of Nadu rice in the market is between Rs.55 and Rs.60 while its maximum retail price is between Rs.70 and Rs.75. The price of a kilo of Samba and red kekulu has further reduced compared to prices in July.

Priyadarshana added that the supply of rice to the market could be done without any disruption as there are adequate stocks reaching the market and because the government also has buffer stocks. He added the reduction of rice prices could continue in to the next month.
