News1st reflects on the career of PM Ranil Wickremesinghe

News 1st takes a brief look at Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s illustrious journey.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was instrumental in making many changes in Sri Lankan politics and society was elected to the legislature for the first from the Biyagama Electorate in the 1977 elections.

At the age of 27, Ranil Wickremesinghe was the youngest cabinet minister at that time.

Ranil Wickremesinghe held portfolios such as Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Employment and Industries and was instrumental in creating the National Youth Services Council and the Free Trade Zone.

Wickremesinghe, who gained much popularity among the public, was vested with the leadership of the United National Party in 1994. He acted in the capacity of the opposition leader by working cohesively with the members of the United National party in the face of many obstacles, making him one of the few politicians to have held the post of opposition leader for a prolonged period of time.

He served as the leader of the opposition for a period of twenty years.
