The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections, or PAFFREL, convened a special media briefing in Colombo on Wednesday, August 19.
Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi that it should undoubtedly be accepted that the general election conducted on August 17 was the most peaceful election in the recent history.
He added that the misuse of state resources and state power, did take place to a certain extent, during this election as well. However, compared to those incidents with the number and nature of incidents that took place in elections of the past, the incidents that took place this time around are negligible.
He went on to note that the police, led by the IGP, have been able to win the trust of the people by implementing the law to the letter. In a similar manner, the Elections Commissioner implemented the law where he even took steps to transfer a few of his own staff members, as well as ministry secretaries.
He added that, after taking all these acts into consideration, this election can be considered as a very transparent one.
