More arrests made over rising election law violations

The number of persons arrested for violating election laws has risen to 729. The Police Headquarters said that 254 raids were conducted to apprehend those who allegedly acted in breach of election laws. This move has resulted in the arrest of  571 persons.

Furthermore, 331 complaints had been received by police for the breach of election laws. The Police Media Unit said that this had led to the arrests of 158 persons. In addition, the Elections Secretariat notes that all campaigning activities should be halted by midnight Friday.

Addition Elections Commissioner M.M. Mohammed said that the canvassing from midnight will be deemed illegal.

The Additional Elections commissioner goes on to note that election offices of candidates contesting at the upcoming election could only operate one election office in one district starting from midnight today.

Furthermore, officers attached to the Ministry of Education and teachers could cast their postal votes in the morning hours of Friday. Police said that rigorous measures will be taken against those who engage in propaganda activities after midnight.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunesekera said that the measures are being taken to apprehend those who violate election laws.
