The United National Front convened a media briefing on Thursday where the Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickremesinghe stated thus:

Our aim is to steady the revolution and good governance attained on the 8th of January and together with President Maithripala Sirisena take this country forward. It is clear to everyone who travels around the country that the people are rejecting Mahinda Rajapaksa, so he will not even secure a majority

When questioned on the allegation leveled by the members of the UPFA about the Batalanda incident which took place between 1988 and 1989, he noted that this is not an issue on Batalanda. So first find out who tip-offed to murder Wijedasa Liyanarachchi – urged Wickremesinghe.

He further stated:

I never entered into an agreement with Prabhakaran.  I did not fund Prabhakaran and if I did not agree to his terms when I wanted to become President in 2005, then why would I reach an agreement.

He went on to express that this is not a Federal System and power devolution will take place until it reaches the villages. He said:

We will not give it to the politicians because it will be given to the civil organisations and religious leaders in the villages.

UNP Colombo District Candidate, Patali Champika Ranawaka noted that this parliament and the President has a steady rule until 2020 and the force here today is the force behind electing the President and even if his picture was stolen , his mandate and his heart is with the United National Front.

UNP Kalutara District Candidate, Rajitha Senaratne noted that the winds of Mahinda are no more and Mahinda cannot market himself anymore.Senaratne said:

We told this at the beginning and the headline reads that victory is assured and includes the picture of the President and they portray it as if it was said by the President and under that they add a line, enter the Maithri Era but all these days they printed pictures saying for a ” Mahinda Era ” and now suddenly, a week before the election, they shift into a “Maithri Era.” What happened to the Mahinda Era and who will be heading towards that?

UNP Gampaha District Candidate, Arjuna Ranatunga noted that they are trying to bring in a war to incite fear among the media and the masses. He said:

So you too have a responsibility and as long as we are here, we will not allow for a war to arise again because we love this country and we are persons who came forward for the country. So we will not allow for a war to take place and we will not allow the country to be divided.
