Over 600 arrests made over election violence

Six hundred and eleven (611) persons have been arrested on charges of violation of election laws thus far.

The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office states that they were arrested based on complaints they have received with regard to suspects who violated election laws and through raids that they carried during the election period.

Police state that they have carried out 214 raids in order arrest persons who carried out election campaigning in an illegal manner.

Four hundred and eighty four (484) persons were taken into custody subsequent to these raids. Furthermore, 127 out of 275 suspects have been arrested based on complaints they have received. The Elections Secretariat says that voters, who were unable to cast  will have another opportunity to cast their votes today, August 11.

Additional Elections Commissioner M.M. Mohammed says that teachers, principals and officers attached to the Education Department who were not able to cast their votes on August 11 due to the GCE A/L Exam duties will be able cast their postal votes on August 14.
