The Department of Registration of Persons says that a special mobile service will be implemented to provide identity cards to people who do not possess a national identity cards.
Commissioner General of the Department, R.M.S. Sarath Kumara says that this mobile service is already operational in the districts of Moneragala and Gampaha. The Commissioner General of the Department of Registration of Persons says that all persons who have submitted applications for their national identity card, will receive their NIC before the general election.
The Commissioner General says that the public could fax the department to receive information regarding their applications for NICs. Sarath Kumara said that a person will not be able to exercise his vote if he or she does not possess an NIC, or a valid and accepted identification document.
The Elections Secretariat says that accepted identification documents include the national identity card, a valid passport, a driving licence, a clergy identity card, or identity cards issued to pensioners and the elderly.
