Various views expressed by leaders of political parties ahead of next month’s parliamentary polls
Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that a document was unveiled on July 29 and the document entailed the same promises so it’s not worth reading it.
He added that they want a struggle even though the world is at their door step to support them. He said: At a time when they are prepared to provide aid, the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities are coming together and at such a time where we are being recognized we have to reap the benefits. It must be asked whether whether we are going to undertake this task or will we engage in politics where we will lose everything due to our petty agendas. That is the decision that lies on Aug. 17.
UPFA Kurunegala District Candidate,Mahinda Rajapaksa said: Taking a look at a police constable, some who join the force as a Constable, retire as a Constable. In 2005, I arrested this problem and ensured justice was meted out so a proper system should be in place for this. We will establish such a streamlined programme for the public sector
UNP Hambantota District Candidate,Sajith Premadasa said: The former president unveiled his election manifesto on July 29 and he says he will give life to the country and rebuild it. But can a person who was rejected by the people, be suitable to give life to the country? 6.2 Million people wanted him to go home. So what does he mean by giving life to the country and rebuilding it? He will not rebuild the country, but will destroy it with his lies and then he will attempt to rebuild himself with such lies
Leader of the Democratic Party Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said: We are contesting this election independently. However, we will not allow the corrupt former president who destroyed this country to regain power because we are against this and we condemn this move with much disgust. So we request the people to use their intelligence, and not cast their vote for those who are corrupt, who do not respect the rule of law and who are against democracy.
