Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 165 runs in the fifth ODI in Hambantota. Sri Lanka’s batsmen came out, guns blazing, in the dead rubber final ODI of Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka in Sooriyawewa on Sunday, to post a total of 368 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 50 overs, the highest total Sri Lanka has ever scored in ODIs against Pakistan.
Chasing 369 for victor, Pakistan scored 203 losing all its wickets in 37.2 overs. Winning the toss at Sooriyawewa today, Sri Lanka Captain Angelo Matthews opted to bat first.Openers T.M. Dilshan and Kusal Janith Perera set a solid platform for the home team with a 164 run opening stand.
Dilshan who scored 62 runs today, also surpassed the 10,000 ODI runs milestone today, becoming the 4th Sri Lankan to hold the distinction. Kusal Janith scored his second ODI century today with 116 runs. Skipper Angelo Matthews and rookie Milinda Siriwardena put on an unbroken 114 run stand in the latter stages of the game, putting Sri Lanka in a commanding position.
Matthews was unbeaten on 70 while Milinda Siriwardana who scored his maiden ODI half century, was not out on 52. Pakistan’s run chase got off to a shaky start with both openers departing cheaply. Ahmed Shehzad was the first to go, stumped by Chandimal off the bowling of Sachithra Senanayake for 18 runs.
Azhar Ali who made a composed 35 was unable to build on his innings and was run out by Matthews. Mohammed Hafeez proved to be trouble for the Sri Lankan bowlers as he went on to bring some stability to Pakistan’s innings and keeping the run rate just under the required.
However, the reprieve was short lived as Hafeez was trapped in front by Matthews on 37. Kusal Perera was adjuged the man of the match while Mohammad Hafeez named the player of the series.
