News 1st recently reported on the harassment of an individual who provided information to the police regarding a stock of heroin smuggled into the country via the sea. This individual was taken into police custody once again, on Sunday, July 19.
While the Thoduwawa beach in Marawila has been identified as an exchange point for heroin smuggled from India, information on a recent exchange came to light on June 12 when a boat carrying a stock of heroin capsized.
On June 21, the informant stated that a vessel capsized just off-shore when he was at the beach. He also noted that when he reached the boat to help and questioned what they were carrying, it was revealed that it was ganja. The informant, however, had noted that the bags were carrying not ganja but heroin, and had informed the police. He was later accused of having hidden away a portion of the stock of heroin.
As such, Asantha Kumara Fernando, was taken into police custody, once again, Sunday evening.
