The controversy surrounding the Central Bank Treasury bond scam has taken centre stage in the run up to the elections, with a court order over the COPE committee’s interim report on the issue stirring much debate on Saturday, July 18.
Ratnapura District UPFA Candidate Vasudeva Nanayakkara says that the court does not have the power to control the activities of the parliament, adding that they have said a number of times that the power vested with the parliament cannot be tampered by the judicial authority.
Meanwhile, Colombo District UPFA candidate Bandula Gunawardena questioned why the prime minister so afraid of the treasury bond scam. The candidate noted that members of the COPE committee have thus decided to come before law. Gunawardena also said that he will take measures to publish a report with all remarks made on the Hansard report as well as during debates in Parliament with regard to this. He added that prohibiting the COPE report will not give cause to any issue and neither the UNP nor the judiciary will be able to prevent that.
