The inaugural rally of the United People’s Freedom Alliance took place July 17 evening at the Salgadu Grounds in Anuradhapura ahead of the August general elections.

Before attending the rally, UPFA Candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa and others engaged in religious observances at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. The UPFA commenced its rally under the theme “Give Life to the Country – Start a Fresh” and the group also made a pledge for free and fair elections.

Rajapaksa, the former president and UPFA Kurunegala district candidate, stated that May 18, 2009, is the day all Sri Lankans stepped out in to the streets with the national flag in hand.

He said: You can remember the day you began to enjoy freedom but six years after, those very hands voted to send me away even though we had the majority in Parliament. I had to leave after I was defeated so I called Ranil Wickremesinghe at around 5 in the morning and handed it over to him and even though I could have remained as the chairman of the Party and I could have obtained prohibition orders from the courts. But we will not do such things because the party is our strength and the party is a force of strength to me. We are prepared to make any sacrifice to protect the party.
