Views were expressed at various locations today on the statement that was made by President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday evening.
Minister of Food Security, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera:
At several rallies, I had commented on the way he operated. He is silent most of the time and he would simply smile and does not get angry and the only time I saw him get angry was when the 20th Amendment to the constitution was presented and when I saw the way he took decisions and uses his mind and I told m self, he is a person far more intelligent than the late J.R. Jayewardene.
Former UPFA MP, Piyasena Gamage said:
They said to allow the Former President to contest from the UPFA in an electorate and district and with that the split was over and that is the truth.
He further added that the president said that he maintains his stance and he said that he is against Mahinda contesting and is against Mahinda asking for the post of Prime Minister and it was party decision to give the nomination to contest the polls …”
Leader of the New Sama Samaja Party,Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne noted that everyone was wondering whether the President would allow Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to follow the fascist actions. And in his statement he said it all – and if Mahinda Rajapaksa had any hopes this was a blow for him.
Leader of the National Unity Front, Azad Sally said:
We knew that President Maithripala Sirisena would drop the bomb at the right time and he expressed his detest to those who are corrupt.
He added that this was brought about Dinesh Gunwardena, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila , Vasudeva Nanayakkara and the others who know they cannot win alone; and we need to accept that and if the government focussed on this more over the past six months, all of them would be in prison and this reached such a level because proper focus was not drawn in to this.
