National Anti-Drug Drive campaign commences in Central Province

The National Anti-Drug Drive islandwide door-to-door campaign carried out by News 1st, Sirasa and Shakthi together with the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board commenced in the Central Province on Sunday, July 12, with the aid of officials from the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and the police.

The programme, which is organised under the theme “Drugs have no place in Me, My Home, and My Country,” commenced in the Kandy , Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts for a second day the Central Province.

Sunday’s programme commenced from Deltota, Kandy subsequent to religious observances, along with a surge in supporters for the that has been growing in number each day. The enthusiasm of the people to eradicate the drug menace and increase awareness has also surged.

The programe in Kandy was held in Deltota, Galaha and Gampola. The campaign organised in the Nuwara Eliya district on Saturday and Sunday saw crowds of people out to support it.

Parliamentarian and General Secretary of the Citizens Front J. Sri Ranga was also present at the the awareness programme that educates people of Nuwara Eliya on the ill-effects of drug use.  A religious ceremony was held at the Kandapola Sri Jinendraarama Purana Viharaya prior to the commencement of the programme.

It has been revealed that the use of drugs has seen a rapid increase in close proximity to estates, and the lack of awareness on the harmful effects of drugs has been identified as a cause. The awareness programme was held in Kandapola, Uda-pussellewa and Ragala on Sunday.  Another leg of the anti drug drive got underway in Matale subsequent to religious observances held at the Muttumaariyamman Kovil.

The programme toured Matale and enlightened the people on the ill-effects of drugs and later toured Elkaduwa, Hunnasgiriya and Raththota to continue to create awareness.  The anti-drug campaign will travel to the North Central Province next week.
