Police say individual from Kandy had foreign currency worth over Rs.3mn

The Criminal Investigation Department has arrested an individual who allegedly attempted to smuggle a stock of foreign currency overseas.

The Police Media Unit said that they had found foreign currency worth nearly Rs.3.6 million in the possession of the suspect.

CID found 16,485 American Dollars, 39, 500 Saudi Arabian Riyals and six Australian Dollars in the suspect’s possession. The suspect is said to be a 46-year-old resident of Kandy .

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect attempted to smuggle the foreign currency to Singapore.

The suspect has been handed over to the Customs at the Airport for further investigations.
