Parliamentary staff organised an event to felicitate Former Speaker of Parliament Chamal Rajapaksa at the Parliamentary complex on July 10.

Chamal Rajapaksa. who entered active politics after contesting the by-elections in 1985 from Mulkirigala, held a several Deputy Ministerial and Ministerial portfolios. He was appointed speaker of Parliament in 2010.

The former speaker stated that he recalls that Parliament convened for a short period under candle light during the time when the Parliament was flooded and that this was one of the best experiences in life.

He added that the tradition that they followed was that the majority party would govern and the leader of the majority party would become the Prime Minister. He said there is now is a new tradition wherein the minority party would form the government and the leader of the minority party would become the Prime Minister.

He went on to noted that if this is the case, there will be no issues in the country and everyone can live in peace. He also added that what was expected was not a temporary farewell since he wanted a break in my 26-year political break and that this is the first event he attended after signing the nomination papers.
