According to the Elections Secretariat, sixty one (61) independent groups have placed their deposits in order to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections, while four political parties have handed in their nominations.
Deputy Elections Commissioner M. M Mohammed said that 24 groups placed their deposits on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Janasetha Peramuna has handed in nominations for the Mahara, Galle and Hambantota districts.
M. M Mohamed further said that Ceylon Workers Congress handed in nominations for the Kandy District. It is reported that 10 political parties have handed in their nominations by Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Elections Secretariat said postal voting for the parliamentary elections will be carried out on August 5 and 6.
The United National Party began signing nominations at the Party headquarters Sirikotha on July 8. UNP Western Provimcial Councilor, Jayantha de Silva stated that they don’t have any drug dealers or gamblers on their list as they granted candidacy after looking into all these factors.
Minister of Sports and Tourism Navin Dissanayake stated that he submitted his nominations as the UNP district leader to contest in the upcoming general election, and went on to note that he will rally everyone together to carry out his election campaign peacefully.
