Speaking at the opening of the National Drug Prevention Programme, President Maithripala Sirisena stated on Thursday, July 9 morning that if a politician is proven to have link with the drug trade, action will be taken against such politician no matter what positions they hold.
The National Drug Prevention Programme commenced at the Ja-Ela Urban Council Grounds. The initiative is undertaken by the Presidential Secretariat, the Police, the Department of Excise and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board. National Drug Prevention month was also declared at the event.
Speaking further, President Sirisena noted that it is imperative for politicians in the country to distance themselves from illegal narcotics. He also emphasised that if a politician is found to have been connected to the drug trade or currently engage in the practice, the government will take every legal measure possible against the said politician, regardless of position or party.
The head of state also stated it his aspiration that by the year 2020, Sri Lanka will be a nation where the income of taverns will not be required in formulating the budget of the government, a task that he said is currently considered impossible.
