At a press conference convened today by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, journalists raised questions on the former president being provided with nominations for the August polls.
General Secretary of the SLFP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa noted that the conflicts that arise must be managed and the the various differentiating views must be resolved. He added that all leaders have reached their policies and that the objective is to bring the SLFP-led United People’s Freedom Alliance, a modern political party, into power.
When questioned as to whether the alliance provide nominations for persons who have such charges against them, national organiser of the SLFP Susil Premajayantha added that some will be denied nomination. He, however, asked journalists not to mention names but to wait until noon on July 13.
When it was pointed out Former President Kumaratunga’s camp urges that the former president is not given nomination, Premajayantha said there is no issue in the advisers of the same party expressing views and that there is nothing wrong in getting on the same stage when nominations are given by the same party.
When further queried regarding the nomination, he stated that everyone must remain patient for a few more hours and that it must be remembered that if the incumbent president makes a statement, they will stand by that statement. He noted that on July 13, it will be made clear that he did not lie.
