With forty two (42) days to go for the general election, the political stage begins to heat up even more. Views were expressed all-around beginning with the Deputy Minister of Justice, Sujeewa Senasinghe who announced to the country that no matter who contests, Mahinda Rajapaksa or anyone else, they will be ‘crushed and defeated’.
A different view came in from the former UPFA Parliamentarian Ranjith de Zoysa when he stated that they were driven to make a decision when Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister asked as to whether they wanted ministerial posts while having 128 MPs. He added that their ‘marriage’ with the government of ‘good governance’ ended following the end of the 100 days, as per the prior decision.
Former parliamentarian of the UNP, Palitha Thewarapperuma, too, spoke up saying that it was the UNP who ‘risked their lives’ to make Maithripala Sirisena the President and that now it is the others who ‘parade around the country lighting fire-works’.
Meanwhile, W.D.J. Seneviratne, another former UPFA parliamentarian noted that as a final response to the ‘complaining’ by all those in the UNP who helped Maithripala Sirisena become President, the Head of State decided to not sin by splitting the party and grant permission to accept the nomination of the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa by putting the SLFP first.
