The panel discussion on the 20th Amendment titled the “20 A plus ” was held at the auditorium of the Kadiragamar Institute on Thursday evening.

MP and legal adviser to the President, Faizer Mustapha noted that if this parliament does not change, the electoral system the country can never change, and that most are of have that view that the next parliament, no party will have a majority. He said that if there is no majority, there is conflict and if there is conflict you cannot pass bills easily. He added that along with 127 members of the SLFP, the president of the United National Party and progressive parties like the TNA supported the excellency in coming to power .

TNA MP, M.A. Sumanthiran added that the system at present is the most democratic system, that is the proportional representational system, including the preferential voting. He further added that the people have the right to chose who will be represented in parliament and that there will be abuses in the system and if talking about violence, one of the ways to combat it is to have female representation and the level of violence will reduce by half

One of the reasons why women are not in politics, he said, is because of the level of violence. He said that since it is envisaged that the new parliament will actually draft a new constitution for the country, during the 19th Amendment debate , the government repeatedly said this goes only halfway, but if this is done there will be a new Constitution by the next parliament.
