Today, June 26 is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking; and this year’s theme is ‘Country with Drug-Free Lives’.
Campaigns have been organised worldwide to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. According to research carried out across the world, an individual is the singular unit in society and when this singular unit uses drugs it causes harm to the whole of society.
The World Health Organization records six million deaths annually as a result of the use of drugs. Research has proven that 80 percent of the deaths recorded are from low and middle income generating countries.
Through a resolution on December 7, 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
Meanwhile, the National Anti-Drug Drive organized by Sirasa, Shakthi and News 1st in line with International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking commenced June 26, covering the entire northern province of the Island.
The drive is being held under the theme “Drugs have no place in me, my home, and my country.” The campaign was launched in the districts of Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Mannar and Vavuniya. The door-to-door awareness campaign was carried out with the participation of officers from the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board.
Local authorities and police officers too are taking part in this campaign against drugs. A special programme to rehabilitate those who suffer serious drug-related addiction will also be launched after receiving relevant information on such persons. The programme will be continue in the Northern Province today and tomorrow.
The National Anti-Drug Drive organised by News 1st, Sirasa and Shakthi together with the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, will later be launched in the Eastern, Central and Southern provinces. The Anti-Drug Drive will cover 72 locations across the island.
