Convening a press conference on June 24, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party commented on its stance on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
Parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayake noted that there is an electorate election and not an election for preferential votes under the 20th Amendment and that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United National Party agree on this. He said electoral reforms are reached in order to prevent nationalism, racism and battle for area as well as prevent the funding of political smugglers.
He added that the new electoral system needs to be passed and before dissolving the parliament heading in to an election and the JVP campaigned. He said that they too do not wish to see the preferential votes system.
He went on to add that the JVP has seven or eight persons without seats but the JVP is in favor of this. However, he said, they are against the amending it. He finally noted that the people of this country want to remove the preferential votes system but it can be understood that the UNP is not very much in favor of it
