At a press briefing convened June 24, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera commented on the MIG deal involving former Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
He stated that Gotabaya Rajapaksa commenced the war subsequent to the obtaining of commissions – and this was the MIG deal – and if that deal, which is treacherous to the nation, is proven they are closer to losing their civil rights and jail would not be sufficient.
The minister added that the payment made for four aircraft by a company known as Belimissa and the address of this company is in London, England – but when looked into, there is no such company there but a telecommunication establishment instead.
He went on to add that the British Virgin Islands is a place where illegal money is hidden and this Belmissa company had been registered before a week before the deal in the month of August. He further questioned if this deal was done between two governments, why was money sent to a secretive company registered a week before and why were the funds sent to the British Virgin Islands.
He went on to add that Udayanga Weeratunga, who is a close relative of the Rajapaksas. served as the Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia since 2006 had intervened in the purchase with Ukraine. Minister Samaraweera said the Ukraine government informed the foreign ministry on November 19, 2014. He further expressed that while serving as an ambassador, Udayanga Weeratunga was involved in the sale of weapons to other individuals in secret.
