A protest arose in the Bandarawela area by residents who are requesting compensation for the difficulties and struggles caused due to the Uma Oya Project.
The individuals from the 6th Grama Niladhari Division of the Bandarawela Divisional Secretriat were a part of the protest. They claimed that the Uma Oya Project was disrupting their day to day lives.
Secretary of the Environment Ministry, Nihal Rupasinghe said that eight assessors are currently assessing the harm done to the region. He said that once the assessments are over, residents will be compensated immediately, to avoid any unfairness. He said that financial provisions have been set aside for this purpose.
In addition, the police said the Bandarawela Magistrate had issued an enjoining order on the night of Saturday, June 20, over the protests. Our reporters said that even though the protesters were informed of the order, the protest commenced nevertheless.
