Views were expressed on the Political fora today as well on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

Professor G.L. Peiris addressing a media briefing today questioned as to how a minority Government which is incapable of passing even a simple bill would be able to achieve a 2/3rd majority required to pass a constitutional amendment.

Deputy Minister Shantha Bandara meanwhile remarked that all parties should come together to pass the 20th amendment and once again reiterated the calls of the current government to come together to pass the amendment.

Raja Kollure, General Secretary of Scialist People’s Front stated that any constitutional amendment that is being passed needs to be implemented in a fair manner which takes into consideration the needs of all communities and political views.

SLFP Media Spokesperson Dilan Perera addressing a media briefing remarked that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is attempting to tangle the 20th amendment with the no confidence motion brought into Parliament. He noted that the PM is attempting to sabotage the amendment within the Cabinet by bringing in amendments that would not receive approval across the board.

Addressing a public function Leader of the House, Minister Lakshman Kiriella reminded the public that it was the UNP that initially called for electoral reforms. He noted that the public is against the idea of increasing the number of Parliamentarians but noted that if all other members of Parliament support this notion then the UNP is also prepared to support it.
