A scarcity of drinking water in the Hambantota Divisional Secretariat area has put its residents in a state of despair.

When Newsfirst looked deeper into the hardships faced by these people, we came across people who are residents of the Meegahadura, Hathekaduwa, Gonnoruwa and Hedilla areas of the Hambantota Divisional Secretariat, waiting anxiously on the side of a carpeted by-road for drinking water.

While many of us have the luxury of an unlimited supply of water, these locals depend solely on a water bowser that comes their way just once a week.

According to the people in the area, the bowser brings in water just once a week and it is barely enough to clean their dishes or even themselves. People also said that they have to wait on the side of the road, which also leads to the Mattala International Airport, until someone brings them some water.

The scarcity of water in the area has taken a toll on even the children in the area. Though a project to supply water through a tube well from Siribopura was initiated, the supply system has not been completed.
