Police say certain laws pertaining to motorcyclists will be enforced stringently from Wednesday, June 10.
Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that this step has been taken in the light of the increasing number of fatal accidents.
In the first four months of 2014, 254 people died in motorcycle accidents. In the same period this year, that number rose to 352.
Traffic police will now pay close attention to ensure that motorcyclists are wearing helmets and that the helmet strap is fastened. Also among the regulations that will be strictly enforced are the regulations prohibiting tinted visors for helmets and overtaking other vehicles on main roads.
ASP Gunasekara added that legal action will be taken against any motorcyclist found guilty of violating these laws.
