Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa toured Polonnaruwa and took part in religious observances June 9 evening at the Sri Saranandharama temple in Bakamuna prior to addressing the gathering.

Speaking there, he stated that he is not sure if people do not like him or are simply afraid of him going to temples and having Bodhi Poojas. However, he said, he believes that a leader must set an example to the rest by going to temple.

Although another meeting was scheduled to be held at the historic Isipathana Rajamaha Viharaya in Polonnaruwa, locals in the area protested against it.

The meeting was eventually held at the office of Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Roshan Ranasinghe, where the former president noted that he has fulfilled his duties to the people of the country as well as the party. He said there is no shortage of mudslinging, noting that people are slinging mud at his family and ministers.

An official there clarified that that there was no disruption to the power supply at the time the meeting was held.
