Diabetes is a disease that is not often spoken about in the same vein as some other more ‘mainstream’ diseases, yet it affects a major portion of the world’s population.

This is due to the fact that people learn to ‘live with it,’ even though the mortality rate would suggest otherwise. In fact, Diabetes kills one person every six seconds, that is  the same rate as that of tobacco.

News1st’s Madushka Balasuriya caught up with the Head of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Sir Michael Hirst, and the Secretary to the Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka (DASL), Dr. Mahen Wijesuriya, to learn more about this dreaded disease.
