The Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment says the ban on sand-mining in the Jaffna peninsula should be removed as soon as possible.
Environment Ministry secretary Nihal Rupasinghe stated the CEA is currently conducting an environmental study in Jaffna in the area containing sand deposits, and that the ban on sand-mining is to be removed upon conclusion of the study.
He also noted that the Jaffna District Secretary had received several requests for the ban to be lifted. Therefore, as a temporary solution, he noted that the removing of the ban on small-scale sand mining in the Jaffna Peninsula will be looked into.
