The National Building Research Organization is taking steps to establish separate coordinating units for districts that are prone to landslides.

Speaking to Newsfirst on Thursday morning, Director of the Landslide Research Unit of the NBRO, RMS Bandara, said through this initiative they intend on maintaining continuous surveillance of those areas prone to landslides as well as creating awareness among the public on a regular basis.

He stated that a number of landslides occurred recently due to the rains that were experienced in those areas. He added that one reason for this was the public not implementing the information that had been shared with them by the NBRO on the prevention of landslides. He noted that through this initiative they intend to monitor and engage in constant awareness programmes with the public.

Bandara added that at present the NBRO has offices at district level and they intend to expand the services provided by these units as well.
