The National War Heroes Commemoration ceremony that took place on Wednesday and was presided by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of their motherland were remembered today at the Cenotaph close to the Parliamentary Complex at 4 p.m.
The Prime Minister, ministers and MPs, top brass of the security forces and the families of war heroes were also in attendance.
Religious leaders invoked blessing on the war heroes who sacrificed their lives. The President, addressing the gathering, stated that he wishes to pay our respects to these sons of the nation who made the ultimate sacrifice, as the Head of State, as well as representating the Republic of Sri Lanka and as the whole Sri Lankan nation. He further noted that, as a Buddhist, he prays that they attain Nibbana and be reborn in our motherland.
Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, Anoma Fonseka, stated that Sri Lankans are citizens of a free and peaceful country living in unity devoid of race, religion and caste and it was the brave war heroes who won freedom for the motherland.
She further noted that, the benefits being enjoyed today by the citizens are based on the sacrifices that were made by the leaders and commanders who provided leadership to those war heroes. She further noted that it is important to unite in order to protect this freedom that was achieved through the sacrifices made by the war heroes.
