Police fire tear-gas at Jaffna protesters (Watch Video)

Police fired tear gas at a protest that took place opposite the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday May 20  against the rape and murder of a school girl in Punkudithivu , Jaffna.

The protestors arrived at the premises after they were informed that the ninth suspect connected to the crime was to be produced in court.

The ninth suspect, who, according to Police Media spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara, fled to colombo after the crime, was arrested in Wellawatte, Colombo.

The protestors had also damaged several vehicles that were parked at the court premises after which, police had fired tear gas to control the situation and arrested 237 protestors.

Meanwhile, demonstrations were held in Puttalam, Mannar and Vavuniya on Wednesday urging that justice be served for the victim’s family. Demonstrations in Jaffna also caused disruptions to the day to day activities of those living in the area.

Three suspects who were arrested in connection to the crime were remanded until May 28  while five others were remanded until June 1.

According to the Police Media Spokesperson, the mother of the victim provided information, as a witness, against one of the suspects who is in remand custody at present.

Senior Lawyer K. V. Thavarasa noted that since the death penalty is not used in Sri Lanka, a twenty year prison sentence can be meted out on the criminals.
