Issuing a media release on Thursday (14th May) former President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced that he does not own the Steel Corporation or the Dubai Marion hotel.
In his communique Mahinda Rajapaksa notes that the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) has begun investigations into a complaint citing that a sum of $48 million invested in the Steel Corporation and a sum of $190 million invested in the Marion hotel in Dubai actually belongs to him. According to the former president the complaint further notes that the owner of these properties is only a front man.
According to the former President the FCID, has filed a B report informing the Kaduwela Magistrate court that investigations into this issue had commenced based on an anonymous letter. The Former President Rajapaksa noted that it is very unusual for the police to report to courts that they are carrying out an investigation on the basis of an anonymous letter.
He adds that the FCID has been set up to harass political opponents while the legality and propriety of the establishment of this unit is already before the supreme court.
Mahinda Rajapaksa went on to say that the FCID, which functions as an extension of the UNP, may have filed this B report to convey to the public the false impression that there is a ‘court case’ relating to concealed assets owned by him.
The former President concludes by saying that this is yet another clever and insidious way of carrying out false propaganda against him.
