The Department of Meteorology forecasts showers exceeding 100 millimeters in many parts of the island and also noted that wind speeds could increase up to 70-80 km/h around the island.
Several areas have been inundated owing to heavy rains. The spill gates of the Nachchaduwa Reservoir in Anuradhapura remain open, as a result of the heavy rain in the area. According to our correspondent all 6 spill gates have been opened, 2 gates have been opened by 1 1/2 feet while the remaining 4 gates have been opened by 1 foot each.
He went on to note that the water is being released to the Malwathu Oya and as a result of the river breaking its banks, several access roads to Anuradhapura have been inundated.
Meanwhile 2 spill gates of the Mahakanadarawa reservoir in Mihintale were also opened on Tuesday,(May 12th).
The Department of Irrigation stated that spill gates of 20 reservoirs falling under their purview have been opened. According to the Director of Water Management at the Dept. of Irrigation, Janaki Meegastanne most of the reservoirs are located in the Anuradhapura district.
Meanwhile the Ragama-Heenkenda road and surrounding areas have been also been inundated. According to our correspondent bus services along the road have come to a halt as a result of the flooding.
