President Maithripala Sirsena had ordered for the immediate stop to the deforestation and land clearing taking place at the Wilpattu National Park.

Issuing a communique, the President’s Media Division says that the President had instructed the respective units to take immediate legal action against persons involved in the deforestation and land clearing taking place at the Wilpattu National Park.

According to environmentalist, the deforestation was taking place without a proper assesment report.

The History of the clearing of forests in the Wilpattu reserve dates back to January of 2010.

The issue arise with the construction of a road through the National Park, during the 2010 Presidential Election.

As a result of the exposure of land with the construction of the road, State Institutions and Private Construction firms resorted to clear the gravel and sand.

Later, the Presidential Task Force on resettling the displaced persons had intervened to illegally clear the forest area know as the Induction Zone.

According to the Environmentalists, it is illegal to clear forest in the area known as the Induction Zone without a proper Environmental Assesment Report.

The News 1st team which visited the Wilpattu area today, came across this situation.

Although there were many permanent and temporary shelters built in the area, there were only a few persons residing there.

Leader of the Janasetha Peramuna , Venerable Battaramulle Seelarathana Thero today visited the Wilpattu National Park and inspected the area in question.
