Its decision day in the United Kingdom.
People of all walks of life will que up at approximately 50,000 polling stations across the country from 0700 BST to exercise their franchise.
Incidentally this election is of significance for Sri Lankans as well for two main reasons. One is whether there would be a shift in foreign policy towards Sri Lanka if the incumbent Government loses power, while the second is the fact that four candidates of Sri Lankan origin will contest today’s election.
Here’s a brief look into their identity.
1.Chamali Fernando
The 36 year old, a Conservative parliamentary candidate is campaigning full time to turn Cambridge blue. She is currently residing in Cambridge.
During the past 12 years Chamali has been serving as a barrister and on countless times has represented people facing the threat of loosing their homes or suffering from the collapse of their business.
2.Ranil Jayawardena
Ranil Jayawardena has served as a local Councillor in North East Hampshire since 2008 and is the Deputy Leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, where he is responsible for the Council’s strategy .He also served as the Chairman of the Community Safety Partnership.
Jayawardene will contest for the North East Hampshire constituency from the Conservative party.
Ranil Jayawardena who has a sound knowledge in economics has highlighted that his main focus is on rebuilding the economic status of the UK.
3.Uma Kumaran
Uma was born in London to Tamil parents who fled to Britain in the midst of a civil war.
She has a BA in Politics, an MSc in Public Policy and speaks four languages and works as a Radio presenter and a producer.
Uma works for a pioneering inner city Council implementing some of the Labour’s flagship policies. She will be running for office under the Labour party ticket for Harrow.
4..Sockalingam Yogalingam
Sockalingam Yogalingam a Sri Lankan born tamil and contests from the Liberal Party for the UK General elections.
