President Maithripala Sirisena says that he aims to increase to five percent, the funds allocated through the budget for health services.

The president made this statement addressing an event held in Maharagama on Tuesday May 5.

An event got under way at the Maharagama National Youth Services Council on Tuesday morning to celebrate the International Family Health Day.

The theme for this year’s International Family Health Day is aimed at a safe motherhood. Individuals who contributed to the strengthening of the family health service in the country, were felicitated at the event.

The president, speaking at the event, said that an independent and democratic country must have employment crises, trade unions must raise their concerns, marches, protests, strikes and Satyagraha Campaigns must be organised, these are the indicators of a Democratic Society.

He went onto say that the voice of the people must be built upon these values.
