A tense situation arose at the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, when a group of opposition party members led by the opposition leader staged a protest.

The group of urban councillors conducting the protest stated that an ambulance had been obtained by a non governmental organisation for the use of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council three years ago. But the protesters charged that the ambulance was used by the chairman of the Urban Council for personal reasons.

Opposition Leader and Hikkaduwa Urban Council member, Nimal Chandana noted that the ambulance received three years ago was used for almost one month but the Chairman of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council Vini Kariyawasam used this vehicle for nearly two years and eleven months after certain parts of the vehicle worth hundred thousands rupees were removed and left in a garage.

He further added that complaints were made to the chief minister and the commissioner but it was of no use and it was after complaining to the police and it was after making all these complains that Wednesday’s protest was staged.

Chairman of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, Vini Kariyawasam refuted these allegations and stated that the council decided to use the vehicle after seeing its deteriorating state.

He further added that as Hikkaduwa is a tourist zone there is a lot of work to be done. He went on to add that the council receives complaints every day. He also noted that three wheelers have to be used for transportation purposes.
