Police fired water cannons and tear gas at a protest march organised by the Inter-University Bhikkhu Federation on Wednesday April 29.
Police took this step when the protesters attempted to forcibly enter the premises of the University Grants Commission.
The protest march commenced opposite the Fort Railway Station citing several demands, which included the curtailing of the recruitment of monks to universities.
Tensions flared when the protesters attempted to enter the University Grants Commission.
