The Ministry of Health says that there is a dearth of upto 2000-3000 nurses in the country at present.
Deputy Director General of Research and training Unit of the Ministry Sunil De Silva says that the dearth of doctors is mostly seen in the Northern and the Sabaragamuwa Provinces.
The lack of nurses in certain provincial hospitals, has hindered the day to day functions at the hospital. The Deputy Director General noted that the National and Sri Jayawardenpura Hospitals too suffer due to a lack of nursing staff.
He added that steps will be taken to enroll 2000 nurses before the end of next year.
